Robot Has Better Social Skills Than Humans

Posted by KatieSoo

On a lazy Sat night, I’m sitting on the couch with a couple of girlfriends, Erica and Reeny. With two glasses of wine and armed with gummi bears, we started to talk to a robot.

Yes. A robot.

If you haven’t checked out Cleverbot, you may be missing out on some riveting conversations! Created by AI veteran Rollo Carpenter who also created a similar web application called Jabberwacky, Cleverbot is a bot that responds to entered text. Your goal in the ‘chat’ is to get it to admit that it is indeed a robot.

It works like this. The page will launch into an interface similar to Google. Then, you can start to talk and chat about anything. No limits. The algorithm will then select previously entered phrases from its database of 20 million conversations to respond. Do not be fooled! Though its answers can be convincing at times, it is still AI.

In my short conversation with ‘it’, the program flirted with me after admitting it was a robot. It asked me if ‘I liked computer programs.’ I’m not sure if I should feel flattered, but I didn’t want to be rude so I kindly bid goodnight.

Now, it’s your turn. Can you get Cleverbot to confess?

P.S. Special thanks to Reeny and Erica! <3
